And to you DB182. Quite a year for you, but hopefully a Christmas with your grandson you could only dream of earlier in the year.

Merry Christmas to everyone else of course.

It's really good to hear things have gone so well with your grandson.

All safe and well this end thank you. 👍

Little update.. so spoke to social worker today they have done the forms to go for a SGO for us..they have given us funding for some legal advice. Now I know a sgo is not for everyone but I think it might be for us.. it gives our grandson a home with us until he old enough and beyond...also he gets to live a normal life with no child service involvement. Is there anything else I need to consider.

Dear DB182

Thank you for the update.

Do have a look at our advice sheets on the subject one is called DIY Special Guardianship Orders - information for family and friends carers and the other Special Guardianship: what does it mean for birth parents?.

It may be a good idea for you to plan ahead, perhaps think about financial support, contact with others with parental responsibility etc. This advice sheet may help with the former and our sheet about parents above the latter.

Best wishes

Suzie

Thank you suzie...can I ask another question. The local authority have said they will pay for our legal advice. I contacted a solicitor who I used at the very beginning of this. Shes agreed to give me the advice shes told me to pass her details on to the local authority which I have. I thought the solicitor would of given me the advice then billed them. So now I'm just hanging about. Lucky our court date as be adjourned until August

Dear DB182

Thanks for your post.

I think that the usual process is as the solicitor described, that you provide her details to the local authority and they then confirm to the solicitor what they agree to pay for your legal advice and the billing details . As you have already passed the details on, hopefully this will now move forward. If not, let the social worker know so that they can query any delay.

I hope that the advice sheets recommended in my previous post have been helpful. You will see that our website has been updated and we have specialist pages for kinship carers and revised advice sheets about special guardianship, which includes a section about legal advice for prospective special guardian, for your information.

I hope this helps.

Best wishes

Thank you suzie. Still not heard nothing I've reminded her a few times now. We have a fcmh on the 1st of july so I'll remind her again then before we start in August.
