Australian research - Children speak out on family violence

"Interviews with children and young people whose fathers use violence reveal that they require their Dads make amends so they can move on. Their voices are now being used in fathering programs”.

In this article, Children speak out on family violence, Andrew Trounson, from the University of Melbourne discusses the findings of Dr Katie Lamb’s recent research* involving 16 children and young people aged 9 – 19 whose fathers had perpetrated domestic violence.

Key messages include that the children and young people want:

• Their fathers to acknowledge what they had done was wrong
• Their fathers to make amends
• Their voices to be heard in programmes for fathers who use violence
• To be control of future relationships with their fathers and when they happen and they will have diverse views on what form any further relationship should take.
