New guidelines on domestic abuse sentencing were published on 22 February 2018.
The Sentencing Council's new guidelines: Overarching Principles: Domestic Abuse will come into effect from 24 May 2018. You can find their press release here.
Aggravating factors which the guidelines note can be particularly relevant to offences committed in a domestic context, and which must be considered include:
• The impact on children – who can be adversely affected by exposure to both direct and indirect domestic abuse, and
• Using contact arrangements with a child to initiate an offence.
