This guide is a development of the work of Alison Richards who carried out the survey called Second Time Around, and wrote Second Time Around: A Guide for Grandparents Raising their Children. Alison died far too young in 2005. It has been a privilege to build on her excellent work as a tribute to the very significant contributions she made in the field of family and friends care.

The Second Time Around publications, and this extended and updated guide, have all been funded by grants from the Family Policy Unit, previously in the Home Office and now in the Department for Education and Skills. Family Rights Group is grateful for this government funding and support.

As the main author of this new guide I am extremely grateful to Cathy Ashley, chief executive of Family Rights Group for her support and feedback throughout the writing of various drafts of this guide. Bridget Lindley, Family Rights Group's deputy chief executive and principal legal adviser, advised particularly on the legal chapters. Chapter 8, on financial matters, is largely from the updated Family Rights Group advice sheet 16 written by Mary Ann Foxwell.
