Working with fathers who present a risk to their children

A one day course which draw upon the findings from our indepth 6 year Fathers Matter research which included examining experiences in three local authority children’s social care services, including fathers who were domestically abusive.

Aims and learning outcomes:

The training aims to enable participates to:

• explore some of the challenges in engaging with risky fathers and ways to overcome them

• hear examples of effective practice in this area.

• hear the views of fathers who have received local authority services.

• consider the evidence from our Fathers Matter research concerning how social care agencies engage with fathers who are risky

• reflect on how practice within their own authorities addresses these difficult issues and begin to develop strategies to take forward more effective working practices.

Who should attend: social workers, social work managers and family group conference co-ordinators.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD): Social workers: This course would contribute 6 CPD hours.


Fathers Matter – working with fathers whose children are involved with children’s services

A one day course which explores the barriers to social workers working with fathers, and how these can be overcome. It will draw upon findings from our indepth 6 year Fathers Matter research.

Aims and learning outcomes:

The training aims to enable participants to:

• update their knowledge of the law in working with families whose children are involved with Children’s Services

• consider relevant research evidence

• explore assumptions inherent in social care practice

• hear the views of fathers’ experiences of Children’s Services

• consider ways to improve their practice and their organisation’s work in this area.

Who should attend: social workers and social work managers
