Parental advocacy in the child protection process

This intermediate level course will consider the duties and responsibilities of children's social care agencies when there are concerns about a child's welfare and how to effectively advocate for parents in such circumstances. The course assumes that you have attended the introduction to child care law course or already have a good knowledge of child welfare law and practice.

Aims and learning outcomes:

• Understand at what point a Local Authority has to get involved in a child’s life, what the local authority should do, and what can happen to the child

• Have a working understanding of what significant harm is

• Be clear about the responsibility of the local authority to work in partnership with parents

• Have an insight into the child protection conference process and the roles of all participants

• Have considered the framework for professional parental advocacy, including confidentiality policy, independence, specialist knowledge and non-confrontational style.

Who should attend: anyone working in the voluntary sector who is or may advocate for parents at child protection conferences and reviews.
