Family Rights Group projects & funding

We run an ongoing series of Grant Funded Projects. These are all designed in response to the needs of families involved with or requiring local authority social care services and planned in consultation with family members. Each project concentrates on a particular area of research or policy development.

1. Asylum Project

Family support and social care advice for asylum seeking families

Family Rights Group have specialised for almost three decades in providing advice and support for families who are involved with social services.  Access to such services is particularly problematic for asylum seeking families and young people to negotiate because of the lack of specialist advice available in this area. In addition, entitlement to support for adults may be withdrawn or withheld at particular stages of an asylum seekers claim, with the result that they become destitute and are not be able to care for their children, who may then end up in the care system. The aim of the project is to support children to be raised safely within their families, regardless of their immigration status. The project will include offering training in this area to other voluntary sector organisations, legal advisers and social workers.  Click here to find out more

2.  Fathers Matter project

This project explores and helps to dismantle the barriers encountered by fathers and paternal relatives whose children are involved with social care services.  The project builds upon the publication 'Fathers Matter: Research findings on fathers and their involvement with social care services (2006, Family Rights Group).  It entails working with higher education institutions and local authorities and developing a training course for social workers. Partnership agreements have been signed with two local authorities to identify excellent local practice and to consider further what steps could be taken to deliver improvements in social care practice.  Fathers with experience of social care service are being supported to take a leading role in the project, as trainers and in designing project newsletters and other materials.

There is a discussion board for families which is serviced by a legal adviser and a separate notice board for practitioner.
