Family Rights Group (FRG) in conjunction with the Office for Public Management (OPM) has been awarded the contract by the DCSF to design and facilitate a series of regional events on setting up and developing family group conference (FGC) services.
Family Rights Group has considerable expertise in supporting the setting up of sustainable of FGC projects. The Charity runs the national FGC Network, has led on the introduction and development of practice standards, published the FGC Toolkit (DCSF/FRG, 2006) on establishing FGC services and has pioneered the world first post graduate award for FGC co-ordinators. The Office of Public Management has expertise in running events and training for children’s services managers.
The events are specifically structured, including tailored workshops, in order to meet the differing and at times overlapping needs of:
The current use of FGCs in England is variable ranging from a small number of local authorities with well established FGC projects that are offering FGCs to all families prior to care proceedings to nascent projects with little experience and knowledge of FGC policy or practice standards. We estimate that around half of English local authorities have no FGC project, with some of these authorities occasionally spot purchasing FGCs. Given this patchwork provision, we have designed a day training/information programme that addresses the different situations in each region and takes into account the varying needs within regions. The events will draw upon local experience and provide for the optimal development of FGCs from the baseline which currently exists. We will hold more than one training event in regions where there is particular demand and will hold a national event on 11th November 2010 which will be designed for established projects but would also be a learning opportunity for authorities who attended the regional events earlier in the year, but have progressed developments by then. The regional events are open to all local authorities but are particularly designed to reflect the needs of:-
