Family Rights Group is piloting the Family Group Conference (FGC) model in two London-based black and minority ethnic community family support projects. The pilot started in May 2006 and is funded by The Big Lottery Fund for a three year period. The project aims to address acknowledged shortcomings in service provision and to increase the accessibility, availability and take-up of FGC services amongst black and minority ethnic families. We know FGCs are an effective model of supporting families to work in partnership with statutory agencies. The project hoped to improve outcomes for young people, with the focus being on reducing the numbers of black and minority ethnic young people taken into care or excluded from school. An international literature review has informed the project, which was evaluated by a research team led by Professor Ravinder Barn from Royal Holloway, University of London.

The project also has a black perspective forum that is held in London. The forum provides an opportunity for black and minority ethnic practitioners working with FGCs to share good practice.
The meetings are at 10am-12:30pm - please contact Tana Thomas for dates of meetings.
If you would like to get involved in the forum, please email a summary of up to 200 words on how you could contribute, including the length of time you've been involved in the FGC field, your availability, your spoken language(s). Please email to tthomas@frg.org.uk or post to Ms Thomas at FRG, The Print House, 18 Ashwin St, E8 3DL.
