The words in the link below says it all and the starting point as you can see is one years custody. It’s all down to the judge to weigh up aggravation and mitigation factors.

Dear StarWars90
Welcome back to the parents’ forum and thank you for your recent posts. You have provided a frank update on your experience of the criminal justice system and as a father involved with children’s services due to your conviction for internet child sexual offending.
You have now completed your custodial sentence and are working well with all the professionals involved to complete the assessment processes necessary before you can re-establish contact with your children who you clearly miss very much.
You are very open in your post about the impact this has had on your children, your wife, and your wider family. From what you say, you appear to be realistic about the importance of preparing for and engaging with the risk assessment and aiming to slowly re-establish contact with your children which you hope will begin soon with family members supervising you when you see your children. It is usually a good idea to involve extended family when arrangements need to be made to keep children safe so I am glad that your brother and sister-in-law have been assessed to be suitable to provide the supervision required for you to spend time with your children at present. It is not possible to predict the outcome of an assessment but showing insight and willingness to change are positive factors.
You have offered helpful recommendations and encouragement for parents to access services to help with mental health needs and have explained how both you and your wife have completed specific programmes with the specialist child protection charity, the Lucy Faithful Foundation to address your behaviour and to increase your wife’s understanding of risk and how to protect the children.
I am sure that other parents on this forum who are going through similar situations will find this helpful.
If you or any parent has a serious concern about how a social work manager has behaved towards them or a decision they have made then it is possible to make a complaint to have this investigated.
If you have any queries or want to share a further update please do post back.
Best wishes
Suzie

Update
There is finally dawn at the end of this long long night.
I had to wait six months after release from prison before I could see my children whatsoever. They wouldnt let my partner supervise. Family supervising contact had to complete a course.
The children were put back on register for a further eleven months until completed an horizon course and risk assessments completed by Lucy Faithful which concluded low risk, worries unsubstantiated and partner a protective parent.
CS accepted report recommendations and recommended deregistration. We've had a new social worker who has frankly spoken of de-escalation and eventual closure of case on multiple occasions.

Case not closed but certainly seeing movement in cs position since off register and low risk assessment.
For the benefit of anyone else going through the same boat the deciding factors seem to be
