Dear West2345

My name is Suzie, one of FRG's online advisers. Welcome to the parents' discussion board.

I am sorry to hear that you have been going through such a difficulties in regards to your daughter's situation. It has clearly been a very distressing time for you.

Am I correct in thinking that your daughter is or in accommodatedvoluntary care and you retain full parental responsibility for her at this time. If this is the case, am I right in thinking you have no intention of withdrawing your section 20 consent and you have agreed the current therapeutic placement to continue?

Alternatively, if Children's Services have issued care proceedings is it possible she is placed under an interim care order and the Local Authority share parental responsibility with you?

Either way, if you have not done so already, it may be advisable for you to consult with a solicitor who will be able to liaise with the Local Authority about your daughter, so you can discuss your full range of options and any objections you may have with regards to possible future placements that are being planned.

In the meantime, can I suggest you continue to work with the professionals involved in your daughter's care to ensure that her needs continue to be met.

I hope this helps.

Best Wishes

Suzie

Dear west2345,

I am sorry to hear that there are currently care proceedings. I can see that it is a very worrying time for you.

Dad's assessment

Either before or during the proceedings’ both you and dad will have the “right” to a parenting assessment as long as it is within the timeframe for the court proceedings.

The assessment will look at your daughters needs (emotional, health, educational, physical developmental).
The assessment will then look at parenting capacity or ability to meet those needs. So for example, if a child has a high level of needs, can the parent meet those high level of needs?
The assessment will look at the environment and support that is available within the friend and family network. The assessment will look at harm a child has suffered or might be at risk of suffering.

Dad is currently being assessed and you are worried about his ability to protect your daughter from the risk of sexual abuse as he had allowed your daughter to go to his mother’s home, either knowing that her husband was a risk to children or not accepting his risk.
In effect, he failed to protect your daughter. So in these circumstances, could dad provide good enough parenting? You could ensure that the social worker. Your solicitor and the guardian know of your concern that dad had failed to protect before and may do so again.

To find out about assessments of the risks of sexual abuse as well as what support can be offered to families, you could contact the Lucy Faithfull Foundation who specialise in all aspects of support around sexual abuse.

Grandmother's assessment

I am glad that your mum has passed her viability assessment. Have a look at our advice sheet about
friends and family carers being assessed as foster carers . It outlines the process.

Has there been a family group conference ? This is a way for looking for support within the friend and family network?

I hope this information is helpful. Please post back if you have further questions.

Best wishes,

Suzie
