Further children after SGO

Post by Skippy » Thu May 04, 2017 2:55 pm

We look after our nephew on an SGO, and we were told by the social worker at the time that if his parents ever had more children, they would be removed.
The birth parents have since moved to a new town in a different part of the country, and someone commented recently that they thought the mother had had another baby.
What steps are taken to ensure that social services teams in different parts of the country are filled in on relevant issues relating to parenting? Who would be in a position to know about the family involvement with children's services if the parents don't tell them? How is information shared?
This is a genuine concern, as they have previously moved between towns to avoid CS, and records were not shared.

Dear Skippy

Thank you for your further post.

I can see from your post that you have concerns about the possibility that your nephew’s parents’ may have had another baby. Your concern is probably relates to the issues that led to your nephew coming into your care.

Regarding the parents’ move to a new area, that should not in itself mean that the new local authority children services department would not be involved. It is likely that they may be involved because of the family history. If the mother attended the hospital it is possible that her name is flagged up regarding previous children services’ involvement.

If you feel worried and want to be sure that there is an investigation, I suggest that you contact your own local authority and explain your concerns. They should be able to make contact with the area where the parents are now living to let them know about any previous involvement they or another area had with them.

You could make contact with the local authority where the parents live yourself whether anonymously or by letting them know of your concerns if there is a new baby and the fact that you are caring for your nephew and the reasons he came into your care.

I hope you find this helpful.
