New system for children with Special Educational Needs

The government's new Children and Families Act 2014 is going to introduce major changes for children with Special Educational Needs - for one thing, they are going to start using the term Special Educational Needs and Disabilities or SEND rather than SEN.

The system of statementing (ie producing a Statement of Special Educational Needs) will be done away with, and instead there will be an Education Health and Care plan, that can be for children and young adults aged 0-25. The aim is to have the education, health and social care departments working together to the same plan, instead of each making their own assessment and plan.

The regulations and guidance to explain in detail how this will work haven't been finalised yet, although it will come into force from September. However, the government has started to provide some information. You can read their paper on implementing the changes here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publicati ... eds-system

They are also carrying out a consultation on updating the SEND Code of Practice: https://www.gov.uk/government/consultat ... o-25-years

Good to see these new education threads as we look after a granddaughter with SEN (now SEND!) on a RO. I am sure we will find FRG info and advice as useful as it has been in other areas.
