Pregnant again what will happen next?

Post by Gands18 » Fri Apr 06, 2018 6:21 pm

Hi I am new to the forum and was wondering if anyone could help please.
We have a SGO on our great niece who we have had for the almost 3 years. She came to us as there was No one else suitable in the family and we put ourselves forward. Both her parents smoked weed and her birth father was reported to police on several occasions for DV. And both have mental issues with depression. Dad has a suspended sentence and a new court case pending. They are currently expecting their 2nd child and 18 weeks into the pregnancy. SS are now involved through the midwife. They previously had parental classes with the LO we now care for they had her for approx 9 -12 months before she went to another family member who over time became unsuitable before going into foster care. She came to us about 18 months old (now 4).
1- what are the chances of them keeping this 2nd child
2-will SS contact us or should we contact them
3- we now live in another county within the UK would this be a problem
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated from anyone who has been through this or is currently going through this .

Dear Gands18

Welcome to the Family and Friends’ Carers discussion board and thank you for your post.

Ied53 has already answered your queries very well. Just to add that children’s services will be undertaking a pre-birth assessment of the couple’s unborn baby which will identify if one or both parents can care for the baby safely. If they are worried that the baby may be at risk, they will arrange a child protection conference with other professionals to discuss this further. They should discuss with the parents if there is anyone who could care for the baby safely after the birth if they are not allowed to. As ied53 advised it is a really good idea to contact the social worker in writing, in the area the couple live, to put yourselves forward as prospective carers and to be assessed as soon as possible if it is likely that the baby will not be able to stay with their parents. Do highlight the fact that you are caring for the unborn baby’s sibling. A family group conference might be offered to the family too to help make plans for the baby. This advice sheet: Relatives and friends taking on the care of a vulnerable child in an emergency may be helpful to you.

Do feel free to post again or to contact the Freephone advice line on 0808 8010366 if you need to.

Best wishes

Suzie
