Just to bump this one up! We have some responses to this survey, and to everyone whose kin-children have participated thank you very much! We are still looking for more children and young people being raised by family and friends carers to complete this short survey - please follow this link to get ...

I have been working as Policy Adviser, Family and Friends Care for eight and a half years at FRG, and I...

Re: Help&Advise&Answers to Question needed
Hi worried new nana, I hope you have been able to get through to our advice line, as the situation you describe is quite complex and it sounds as though it really would help if you could talk it through with someone. I'll focus on the specific questions you've asked, as these sound like the most imp...

Re: child protection plan
You may have previously heard about children being 'on the child protection register'. The terminology changed to being under a child protection plan, but the effect is basically the same — as ied stated, it means that this is a child whose welfare and development are being closely monitored by the ...

Re: failed assessment
Mamma, I can't recall whether you were being assessed to foster your grandson, or for a Special Guardianship Order (SGO). If he is only 9 months old, then I would expect the local authority will probably want you to apply for an SGO, since if he can't go back to his parents then the local authority ...

Re: Levels of payment for Family & Friends Carers
Egged, the legal situation you are describing is one where children are 'accommodated', that is to say they are 'looked after' children, but as a result of a voluntary agreement between the parents (or persons with parental responsibility) and the local authority. There should be no distinction, in ...

Re: Long term contact
ied is absolutely right that it is common to maintain a high level of contact until a case has been resolved, or unless the other parties to the contact are not showing up or behave inappropriately during the contact. Once a placement has been made permanent, contact with parents and other significa...

Re: Levels of payment for Family & Friends Carers
Andi59, your local authority should deal with you in the way prescribed in the government's Family and Friends Care Statutory Guidance. There is a section in chapter 4 of this statutory guidance that deals with how local authorities should treat family and friends foster carers. These are what the p...

Re: moving from fostercare to forever home
Mamma, the social worker may have been referring to the transitional period that takes place when children are moving from foster carers to adopters. In that instance, children (particularly older children) are aware that they are moving to people who are going to become their legal parents, but who...
